As a way to be more environmentally aware, these businesses in Sleepy Eye are going green.

SouthPoint Federal Credit Union

  • E-banking: SouthPoint now has eStatements available online. Instead of mailing a paper account statement each month, you can get one electronically and very quickly. They also have an Online Bill Pay program that allows you to skip writing and mailing checks each month, as well as e-Alerts.

  • Commercial car washes are a more earth-friendly option that sudsing up your SUV in the driveway. The pros use less water per wash and often reuse rinse water.

  • Buy from local farmers, like the summer corn stand. You have a better idea of where your food came from and you'll help reduce the energy that's required to transport food across the country.

  • Drop off clothes, shoes and other items that are in good condition that you and your family don't use anymore. Recycling clothing helps reduce the energy needed to make more clothes.

  • This large manufacturer is committed to working with their vendors and employees to incorporate environmentally friendly business practices into their daily operations. They recycle almost all excess raw materials, including over 4500 tons of paper that is re-manufactured into other paper products. They purchase many raw materials wtih recycled content. They source all stock paper from mills certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and Forest Stewardship Council. They utilize inks based on soybean and other vegetable oils to limit the amount of VOCs in their finished products.

Lifetime Eyecare Center

  • Donate out-of-date prescription glasses to be sent to third world countries where volunteer doctors examine and fit people with these donated glasses.

  • They are a free collection site for fluorescent bulbs from 12-1:30 on May 22.
